Hop research

Our group is focused on hop genetic studies in close collaboration with the Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing. Recently, we have been studying the phytopathogenic fungus Verticillium albo-atrum, which causes lethal damage to hop (Humulus lupulus L.), the economically most important agricultural crop in Slovenia. The spread of Verticillium wilt in hop gardens is a serious threat to hop production and since planting of resistance cultivars is the most effective way of combating the disease, our efforts are aimed at increasing the efficiency of hop resistance breeding. By genomic approach we try to identify QTLs, markers and genes involved in resistance and by differential expression analysis (proteomics and transcriptomics) we study hop-Verticillium interactions to understand molecular mechanism of resistance.
